Think of South India and silk sarees invariably come to mind. The South Indian bride still prefers to wear the traditional silk saree on the occasion of her wedding. With changing times, trends in sarees are also changing. Retailers in South India are well known for their innovations in sarees. This article attempts to throw light on the latest innovations in sarees in the silk and temple area of South India.
Some of the significant innovations in silk sarees by South Indian retailers have been described below. Most of the saree innovations are by Sri Kumaran Silks in Chennai.
The saree-shirt combo
Sri Kumaran Silks has launched the concept of a saree-shirt combination, which is known as ‘Jodi Pattu’. They have designed sarees with a matching shirt piece, which is meant for the lady’s husband. Both the saree and the shirt are made of pure handloom silk. The saree has a beautiful embroidered pallu and matching embroidery is done on the shirt piece too.
The color-changing saree
Sri Kumaran Silks has also come up with the concept of a silk saree that changes color. When the wearer of the saree moves out of her home, the color of the saree changes. The retailer claims that this is the first ever color-changing saree to be developed in the world.
The Durbar Krishna SareeThe Durbar Krishna saree has been developed by RMKV. This saree depicts a famous picture of Lord Krishna in the pallu, in which Swarowski crystals have also been used. This image is believed to bring good luck to the owner.
The zip-n-wear saree
This is another innovative concept in silk sarees by Sri Kumaran Silks. They have designed a saree with four different but matching pallus. Each of these pallus have an attached zip. The wearer of the saree can easily detach one pallu and attach another. This saree is popularly known as Zip-n-wear saree.
The pocket sareeThis is yet another innovative concept by Sri Kumaran Silks. This saree has a pocket, which can hold a cell phone and other small items.
The landscape saree
Sri Kumaran Silks has also developed a new type of saree called the Landscape Saree. This saree is made of pure silk and the design of a rural landscape is woven into the pallu

In celebration of Diwali, Agriya organized a mind-blowing fashion show. It was held in both the branches - Bangalore on October 30th and in Chennai on November 3rd.
India has a rich, diverse and unique textile tradition. The extraordinary range of Indian textiles reflects the cultural richness and adaptability of the country. Interestingly nowhere else will anybody wear the range of colour combinations like the Indians do. We want to showcase India to the world, as we see it now. So we have used Indian tradition and culture as the main theme in the Fashion show.
The main focus of the show was to select people under three titles, namely, Mr. & Ms. Traditional, Mr. & Ms. Congeniality and Mr. & Ms. Style; each representing a different culture of India. Victor and Dhileepan (the HR of Agriya) conducted the Fashion show. The honorable judges were Srikanth and Rekha Rao in Chennai and Aparnaa and Vijayalakshmi in Bangalore. [Editors Note: A special mention must go to Srikanth who proved to be the first unbribable judge in the history of India :)]
That evening was amazing and it turned out to be everything I had envisioned. The venue was very chilled out and and there were lots of us in the audience. The behavior in the audience mimicked the scene backstage. Echoes of laughter and anticipation filled the auditorium. We were all so excited and nervous to get on the stage and perform, even then we couldn’t stop talking and shouting out comments about other participants performing on stage. We encouraged even the shiest of us to get up by giving a big applause.
The most refreshing thing was most of the smart Girls and Guys came in traditional costumes. One of the highlights was that two foreigners embraced the fashion show and came in traditional dress. Some of the staff from both offices, participating under the style category, came in a modern wardrobe.
Another nice touch is Sheerin (Vice President) and Peter (Online Marketing Manager) also participated in the Chennai Fashion show.
The show started amazingly. On the catwalk, the light shined on gorgeous shimmering dresses like red and gold sequined shirts, sarees, and long robes, that are wore by all participants, the audience was taken on a journey into the fashion world of India.
In Chennai, most of the male participants came in dhotis and nice shirts, and girls wore ethnic dress like sarees with attractive jewelry to add a dazzling effect to the wardrobe to illustrate the south Indian culture. Some girls also came in salwar kameez’s, skirt’s and top’s to display the other traditional scenes of Indian culture. To present the collections to a strong cheering crowd of fashion lovers in the room, the participants walked with confidence (well, most of us!) without any practice!
The contestants walked to the podium with warm smile. They not only showcased their dressing style, but also displayed their talent by answering the puzzling questions fired on them. I think my colleagues did a great job and made it a joyful and a successful event.
After analyzing the performance, the judges announced the results. Results in each branch are as follows:
In Bangalore:
1. Mr. Traditional (1) SubbaReddy
Mr. Traditional (2) Shashank Kumar
2. Mr. Style (1) Sasi Kumar
Mr. Style (2) Praveen
3. Mr. Congeniality (1) Suresh
Mr. Congeniality (2) Krishna
In Chennai:
All the contestants received a traditional award who participated for Mr. & Ms. Traditional.
1. Mr. Traditional: Sathish Kumar
Mr. Traditional: Murugesh Babu
Mr. Traditional: Abdul Malick
Mr. Traditional: Narayanan
Mr. Traditional: Bala
Mr. Traditional: Mohamed Yasil
Ms. Traditional: Sheerin (Vice President)
Ms. Traditional: Jayashree
Ms. Traditional: Kabila
Ms. Traditional: Isaivani (ME!)
Ms. Traditional: Sugitha
2. Mr. Style: Annamalai. He catwalked like Padaiyapa (a famous Tamil movie) with a stylish shirt and jeans.
Mr. Style: Varun Kumar. He also got Mr. Ejaman title. Can you guess why he was crowned the additional title? Yes of course, because of his stylish walk like Rajinikanth (a Tamil actor!)
Ms. Style: Ramya. She came in a gorgeous skirt and top
Ms. Style: Jayapriya. She came in a good looking and very colourful Salwar Kameez.
3. Mr. Congeniality: Peter. He wore a fine Kurta - a north Indian traditional outfit.
Mr. Congeniality: Tibo – he just came in his own French style!
In Chennai, the prizes were issued by Aravind the Managing Director of Agriya. On behalf of us, I would like to especially thank Aravind for spending his precious time with us. When asked whether he was concerned about people being taken away from their work duties for these events, he replied:
“I think such breaks are a welcome change from their work, as it helps them to express themselves better. We all know Agriyans are good in expressing them self through code and the other works they do, this will help them to express their fashion sense and show us a different side of their personalities. So I highly recommend to have such events to be part of our culture as it has been…And oh yes lets all not forget ‘All work and no play makes jack a dull boy”
And when the staff enquired whether there will be any more events in the future, he responded “Yes please be ready to be surprised from the HR desk” – so there you have it, Agriyans, watch this space for more fun filled events from the HRD!
In Bangalore the prize was distributed by the honorable judges Aparnaa and Vijayalakshmi
A special thanks to Victor and Dhileepan for organizing the event. Victor called the event a “complete success” but acknowledged that due to the shortage of space “we missed many people”. He went on to say that such events “are part of HRM to create a fun environment in the work place”.
I feel extremely happy and greatful to be one of the participants. It was so wonderful to see all of our friends and colleagues together in such an amazing Fashion show.
Check out the colourful photos below, which were taken during show.

Today, FEMINA is one of the strongest international brands with a vast readership in India and abroad. She initiated the Miss India contest in the mid-sixties for the journal and brought it to its present international stature. Vimla Patil promoted Indian textiles and fashion garments – especially handlooms – for decades by presenting over 4000 fashion shows in India and most countries of the world. |
| 2005 begins with a promise of worldwide trends! |
FASHION BECOMES A PRIME RETAIL TRADE IN 2005
One retail fashion garment giant – Provogue – set the New Year trend of catering not only to hi-end fashionistas but also the young achiever crowd by launching their 2005 range with top models and celebrities of Mumbai. Several new looks were displayed in their shows which presented their recent collections.
| Provogue’s Casino Collection shirts are showcased by supermodels Upen Patel and Aryan Vaid. These shirts are worn with casual, light-coloured pants for maximum impact. |
MINIMALISM MAY BE THE ‘MANTRA’ OF THE NEW YEAR:
| Metroscape was a collection devoted to minimalism – the mantra of the New Year. This range of garments concentrated on fine detailing and excellent craftsmanship and aimed at the ‘go-getter’ market! It predicted a season of panache and vigour, energy and aspirations for men in the coming year. Another collection of shirts harked back to the 60s and presented an attractive range of shades in blue and red. Fashions for young men and women spelt fun and energy. The Club Casino Party-line clothes projected passion, the courage to break rules for progress and distilled glamour in a metallic range of fabrics. | Provogue’s ‘little black dress’ is no longer little. It shimmers and sleeks out a woman’s personality like no other ensemble. Designers and films stars predict that black will remain the smart choice of celebrities through the New Year. |
BLACK REMAINS THE ETERNAL FAVOURITE:
| Young actor Fardeen Khan and supermodel Tupur Chatterjee, with other models, show the Metroscape Collection which mixes panache and personality-plus for the young achiever generation. | Black, the Provogue design team predicted, would be the eternal favourite among colours. As Bipasha Basu, the dark, daringly-sensual star of Bollywood says, “Stars and celebrities are always on show. They are under pressure to look good, well toned and glamorous. Whatever their work pressures and personal tensions, they have to shine whenever they appear in public or at work. For all such people, black is a life-saver on the fashion scene. It gives a slim, put-together look, which is instantly impressive. Black can be dressed up with stylish jewellery and smart accessories. Every star has a number of black ensembles in her-his wardrobe.” |
Film star Fardeen Khan, who is the brand ambassador for Provogue, illustrated how a handsome man can strut around in black from their Metroscape Collection. Black, he and Tupur Chatterjee showed, looks equally sensual on men and women.
| ANGELIC WHITE TOO, STANDS THE TEST OF TIME The Angelic White look by Provogue makes even purity and innocence look sensual when supermodels showcase these beautifully crafted pantsuits. |
That white will also remain the ever-popular colour for 2005 was demonstrated by the Angelic White collection offered by the same company. Flowing, fluid ensembles and compact dresses spelt energy and hope. The models that showed these outfits were Upen Patel, Aryan Vaid, Tupur Chatterjee, Nina Manuel and Aanchal Kumar among many others. With these collections coming into the market in the winter-spring months of 2005, Provogue will be one of the largest producers of fashion garments in the retail market in India.
| YOUNG DESIGNERS CONTRIBUTE TO THE 2005 LOOK Saleem Asgarally, a younger generation designer who has created an impact on the fashion scene also came up with a stunning collection. Mostly consisting of party wear, this collection showcased the newest craze of kaftans and ponchos among fashion lovers. “Kaftaans are inspired by Middle Eastern lines,” says the designer, “But in 2005, they are seen in an entirely new avatar. They are detailed with embroidery in silk or zari and can be worn to parties, over swimsuits and to lounge bars and hip parties. I have designed Spanish looking ponchos for 2005 too. These too carry exotic embroidery. In my collection also are exquisitely embroidered cholis, layered and ruffled skirts a la Spanish dancers, bejeweled corsets and classic black chiffon dresses with exclusive accessories like belts, bags and shoes.” In fact, long skirts, which will be the rage of the year ahead, are the focal point of young designers’ collections. Long, layered and ruffled, skirts this year will be in combinations of fuchsia and flame, lime and turquoise or other contrasting shades. They will be worn with corsets or backless halters to add a touch of sensuality. | A Spanish style patchwork poncho with glitter details. Saleem Asgarally designs ponchos for lovers of glamour teamed with comfort. Here, models wear them with pants. |

INFLUENCES FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD
Most young designers predict that 2005 will be the year of ‘influences from all over the world’ in Indian fashion. These looks will bring in the Spanish Poncho, swirling Spanish skirts and European corsets for women and slim fitted velvet shirts with ethnic prints and stretch denim with embroidered accents for men.
THE SAREE GETS A BRAND NEW LOOK
| Designer Nisha Sagar and the famous fashion house of Burlington’s Managing Director Ms. Kapoor pose with models in Nisha’s shimmer-shine sarees in pastel colours. Worn with halter style cholis, these sarees will be the international rage of 2005. | Of course that ‘five and half metres of elegance’ garment – the saree – remains the eternal favourite of all Indian women, albeit in ever-new avatars. What’s new is that at last, the saree is being accepted as an international fashion garment in other countries too. Designers abroad are marvelling at the resilience and infinite possibilities of this mere length of fabric and teaming it with tops, which are extremely sexy and attractive. Designer Sangeeta Jashnani has created a collection of beautiful sarees, which are worn with corset-like embroidered cholis with diamante straps. These sarees are in traditional brocades or fine chiffons, depending on the taste of the wearer. In the same style, she offers ghagra cholis and Western fashion ensembles too. For men, there are traditional sherwanis and Jodhpuris for special occasions. |
“The saree,” says designer Nisha Sagar, “Symbolises the essence of the Indian woman. It turns even an ordinary woman into a magnificent personality. The day is not far when Western women will wear stylized sarees to parties and festive celebrations.” Nisha’s sarees and cholis, which she created for the reputed House of Burlingtons, offer the shine and shimmer typical of India in her latest collection.
A DAZZLING YEAR FOR INDIAN FASHION
All in all, 2005 promises to be a dazzling year for Indian fashion. With Indian designers showing their collections in many Western countries and setting up boutiques in Middle Eastern cities like Dubai, Kuwait and Muscat and working with French, American, Australian and other international designers to create fusion looks, the future seems not only promising but also path-breaking. With the huge treasure of textiles, talent and craftsmanship, India is poised to break all barriers in the fashion trade and make an impressive impact in the hi-end as well as retail market worldwide!
The saree is ‘The Queen Around The Globe’ say many Indian designers. Sangeeta Jashnani adds sex and snazz to this eternal favourite. She gives this white saree a rainbow of coloured embroidery with zari and makes it sensual with a corset choli with diamante straps.
